Plaster is a building material used for the protective and decorative coating of walls and ceilings.
The most common types of plaster contain gypsum, lime, or cement. Each type of plaster works in a similar way. Plaster is manufactured as a dry powder and is mixed with water to form congealed but workable paste that is applied to the surface. The reaction with water liberates heat through crystallization and the hydrated plaster then hardens.
Plaster can be easily worked with metal tools or sandpaper, and can be molded, either on site or pre-formed pieces which can be put in place with adhesive.
Plaster is also regarded as the breathing wall. With excellent properties, this wall material, plaster, is accepted more and more by people. When air humidity is high, this kind of wall will automatically absorb water. When the weather is dry, it will release moisture, and will keep the room comfortable.
Plaster is durable. If properly mixed and applied, the chemical reaction that occurs developed a strong bond in the mixture. Plaster will dry like a rock-like substance making it exceptionally durable. It is more resistant to knocks and dents in most cases.
Plaster helps keep your house insulated and draft free. It covers your entire wall, filling any pre-existing cracks with an added layer of insulating material. Furthermore, it offers a thermal mass to help moderate seasonal and daily fluctuations in the outside air temperature. That means plastered buildings stay warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer for year-round comfort and energy efficiency.
There is no substitute for the look and feel of plaster. Plaster covers the entire wall or ceiling, concealing all joints in a smooth, appealing way.
Experienced real estate appraisers and discriminating homeowners know the difference. Plastered interior walls and ceilings indicate that the home builder used superior materials and craftsmanship to build a quality home.
